Iyengar Yoga follows the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar, a yoga master whose impactful life extended from 1918 to 2014. Through dedicated practice he gleaned ways of bringing the inner connections yoga affords through attention and awareness, which he called meditation in action. The Iyengar tradition of practicing asanas and pranayama opens the mind and body of those who practice it to offer a more layered experience, from the physical experience to the deeper layers of mind and spirit. This method helps students to find a firm foundation in each yoga pose (called asanas) and, according to their own capacity, bring each part of the body into clear connection using the principles of alignment.
Want to try a class? You do not need to be flexible to do yoga, the asanas (specific stretches sometimes called poses) are taught in safe easy to follow steps so that you feel stable and are able to breathe freely. You are welcome to work with your back to the wall for extra support. The poses are often broken down into stages that are easy to pause in and build up experience slowly. Like a landing on a staircase, from there you can go to the next stage or exit the pose the same way you went into it.

Mary is thorough and makes sure you do the poses properly and safely! The wide range of classes allow me to move on to more advanced yoga as I need to. There's never a dull moment! Bonus: Mary has gorgeous jewelry for sale and also has all the props needed for class available for you to borrow.

It had been over a decade since I'd taken a yoga class and I'm not sure how the experience could have been improved. Having studied and practiced yoga consistently in my 20's (including 6 months in India) I entered the long overdue class hoping for the unwatered down, non-hybridized (30 Minutes to Enlightenment, or Zumba Yogachi Bow 90X), Iyangar Yoga that I was taught in India.

To have an instructor of Mary's caliber in Petoskey is a gift. She is sincere, authentic, and clearly a purist relative to the art. I look forward to breathing my way through the next class.
