Joseph Pilates called his system The Art of Contrology, Return to Life. This is what we now call "Pilates". He was an asthmatic and athlete who developed his system in the beginning of the 1900's and opened his first studio in NYC in 1923. Pilates is based on six different principles: breath, concentration, stabilization, control, flow or efficiency of movement and full range of movement.
Peter Roel, B.A., PMA-CPT, director of Pilates Shop Teacher Training, co-founded and co-owns Pilates Shop/Yoga Garage in New York City. Peter was educated at the Dance Conservatory at Arnhem in The Netherlands, earning a B.A. in Dance Education, which entailed Psychology, Pedagogy, and Anatomy. He moved to New York City in 1983 and danced as a principal dancer with Elisa Monte and the Martha Graham Dance Companies, among others. He started his Pilates education in 1984 with Kathy Grant, with whom he studied and worked with for 15 years.
The company was created as a life-confirming move to work with people in an environment which is reflective of our work: serene, focused and holistic. We offer Pilates and Yoga in a small learning environment, where clients are taught privately, in duets, or at most in groups of five. We approach the individual needs of each client, regardless of age, background, or circumstance.
We accept cash, checks, AmEx, Visa, and MasterCard. Sessions are by appointment only. As a service to our clients, we offer standing appointments. Payment is due before the start of your session. No refunds on purchases. To avoid being charged, all scheduled sessions must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance of appointment time.

In the seven years I've been coming to PSYG, I've become so much stronger and so much smarter about exercise. The teachers provide a high level of personal attention even in group sessions. They are simply the best. I feel incredibly lucky to have them on my team.

I have experienced chronic back pain for over three years, after endless PT, steroids injections, pain medicine, a colleague recommended for me to try Pilates at Pilates Shop Yoga Garage. Within a couple of weeks of starting at Pilates Shop Yoga Garage, I experienced more relief, without the need of medication and injections and transitioned to feeling stronger and pain free!

The teachers at Pilates Shop Yoga Garage care about your well-being and provide individual attention as needed to ensure you get stronger and heal. I'm so grateful to have found Pilates Shop Yoga Garage! Thank you, Peter and Cathy, for your amazing care and teaching me how to engage my core, breathe while strengthening my whole body! You rock! Forever grateful, Carmen C.

A gem of a place and Peter is a master teacher and so warm and manages individual routines. In one year I have gotten so much stronger and overcome chronic injuries. The staff are great and other teachers are excellent.

This is a small, friendly, well-run studio that provides superb, individual and group Pilates and yoga instruction. I have be going there for over a year now. I have found all of the instructors to be excellent, and they, along with co-owner Peter Roel have helped me enormously in recovering from a knee injury.

Amazing. Even the group classes are tailored to the individual. You are always doing your own workout. I started with Peter to help my running but am learning for a woman of a certain age the practice is great for keeping all the muscles working, and achieving great posture and balance. I'm running greater distances and much lighter in my feet. Injury free.

I'm 62 and I've been coming to PSYG for three years. It's important to me to stay fit as I age. I love what Peter and staff do for me! I've worked with several of his people over the years and they are each very knowledgeable, patient, friendly, upbeat and helpful. As is Peter, whom I've also worked with in both private and group sessions. You'd think after all this time Peter would get tired of constantly reminding me of ways to hold my body or ways to approach exercises, but no! he is unfailingly attentive and interested in what I'm doing. One time, in a private conversation we were having, he let on how much he loves his work -- and it shows. I can't recommend his studio enough.

As a Pilates instructor myself and neighbor, I've been meaning to try this place for years. When I became pregnant, I decided that I wanted to do small group classes or privates instead of a big class or my own instructing at home to be sure I was working out safely. The privates are really good. The small group classes are odd. It's about 5 people usually, and everyone is doing something different - which in theory sounds great (individualized). However, the instructor just quickly gives you an instruction and then walks away and is on to the next person. Therefore, you are often left not being completely clear what you're supposed to do (and there's nobody to imitate) or finishing your exercise and laying there waiting for her to come back to you (wasting your time). Also, they're $50 a class. I enjoyed it, but it didn't seem worth it to continue - for the price or the workout.

Peter has a rare gift of designing the unique exercise for the needs of an individual. I have come to him with the threat of surgery in one of my knees and the loss of my ability to walk. He not only put me back on my feet, but was able to teach me a routine that allowed me to be pain free. In short, he has diagnosed and treated what most doctors and physical therapist could not and did not do.

Now three years later I have become a devoted practitioner of the Pilates cult as taught by this amazing teacher and true artist. He has trained a very able group of teachers to run with him his studio, so you are certain to have the style that will suit your needs at any time of the day. I will highly recommend this establishment.

I've been doing yoga and practicing pilates for years, and I have to say, the approach by the owners of this business is extraordinary. Since there are two halves to the business, I will separate them out: The pilates studio is located on 108th and Broadway. Every instructor is an experienced and trained in Pilates (but is also usually a dancer or former dancer). the owner, Peter Roel, has a gift of understanding people's anatomies and physical quirks. He's very intuitive and perceptive, and that leads to someone who is never going to injure you, but who will push your body in new ways to make you more flexible and have more strength.

You can work privately or in small groups, and even in small groups, they are paying a lot of attention to detail. I have tried lots of instructors there, and I learn something new from each person, but the overall philosophy is consistent. If i could, I'd go 4 times a week, because I never feel better (or taller) than when I leave the studio.

As for yoga, they send their instructors to you. You can also take the classes privately or in small groups. I've been doing yoga with the same 2 women for the last several years, and our instructor is the other owner Maxine Roel (and Peter's wife). The difference between Maxine's careful approach and a large group class in astonishing.

She really listens to people and how their bodies are responding, and gives a totally individualized approach. It's a blissfull way to incorporate a yoga practice into your life. I wish all the other things I do had people who were so thoughtful and caring who were in charge. It's a warm, clean, neighborhood spot that's worth checking out even if it's not in your neighborhood!

Pilates Shop Yoga Garage offers the best in pilates and yoga. The teachers are very knowledgeable and provide an intense workout in a supportive environment. The teachers of PSYG are also capable of structuring a session for someone with an injury or an issue such as a bad back or joint replacement. It is rare to find a studio that can work with anyone no matter what condition they are in.
