The theory that the ancient Chinese used to explain how acupuncture works is that the acupuncturist maintains and balances the flow of energy (referred to as Qi) in the body through the use of acupuncture needles inserted in acupuncture points. This restores the proper flow and balance of energy, allowing the body to naturally and properly deal with the problem causing the health issue. A simple explanation of acupuncture is instead of using the word 'qi' or 'energy' if we think about it as oxygen, blood, nutrients being directed in the body by using the acupuncture points and speaking to these points through the acupuncture needle, it becomes much more clear to see how healing takes place through acupuncture. Keep in mind that the ancient Chinese did not have MRIs, X-rays or other complex diagnostic equipment to explain the results that occurred with treatment. Therefore, acupuncture was explained simply to be able to pass on the information to subsequent generations. The imagery of qi and energy flowing through the body using different acupuncture meridians is just one of the theories.
Now that we have complex diagnostic equipment, a great deal of research is being done to find out exactly how acupuncture works. Brain scans have shown intricate connections between acupuncture points and various areas of the brain affecting things from hormone and endorphin production to immune response.
