Traditional Japanese Acupuncture in Chicago
Vital Directions was founded on the principle that Traditional Japanese Acupuncture offers profound healing through refined palpation and delicate needle techniques. With over 25 years of dedicated practice since 1997, our founder has developed expertise in Shakuju and Meridian Therapy, methods rooted in classical Chinese medical texts adapted by Japanese practitioners in the 20th century. We specialize in non-invasive treatments that restore balance to the body's energy systems, serving patients in Lincoln Square, Chicago. Our approach integrates decades of clinical experience treating diverse conditions, from chronic pain to stress-related disorders, with a focus on individualized care. As an educator at Pacific College of Health Sciences, our lead practitioner shares knowledge with future acupuncturists while maintaining active clinical practice. We emphasize palpation-based diagnosis to assess treatment effectiveness through tangible physiological changes like improved pulse quality and skin tone.

Our practice combines traditional techniques with modern understanding of nervous system regulation, offering alternatives for those sensitive to conventional acupuncture methods. We maintain affiliations with respected institutions like the Toyohari Association and NCCAOM, ensuring adherence to highest professional standards. Our commitment extends beyond symptom relief to promoting long-term wellness through complementary therapies like dietary counseling and home moxibustion instruction. The practice environment fosters focused, one-on-one treatment sessions that prioritize patient comfort and therapeutic effectiveness. We serve a diverse clientele including athletes, meditators, and individuals recovering from chronic illness or medical treatments.

In 1998 I tore my ACL and had a patellar tendon transplant to replace my ACL. I was in my 40s then and I visited Tom after each Physical Therapy session. I healed almost twice as fast as a 29 year old patient who had his surgery with the same doctor the same day as I did. I have a CLL which should have made my recovery much longer that the average patient, yet because of the acupuncture and Toms incredible treatments, I returned to an active life afterwards. I bike commute around 16 miles a day and thank Tom for his professionalism and skill.

I have been working with Tom for a long time to address long term digestive, injuries and the occasional bug. I almost always feel 50% better after just one session. I especially appreciate his life style suggestions. I have also sent him some referrals who have also been very pleased with their results. His studio is very welcoming and comfortable with a great view of his garden. I recently went in for a fall on icy stairs that resulted in a serious concussion.

After one treatment I was well on my way to healing and getting back to work. He has also resolved a frozen shoulder for me. I consider Tom to be my primary care. He is the first one I call when I have some kind of problem. The results have been just great for me.

I 'd been semi laid-up with miserable allergies for far too long when I finally decided to try acupuncture to alleviate the problem. (I had been seeing a medical doctor for months and still felt tired and lousy). It must have been my lucky day because I met acupuncturist and Chinese medicine specialist Tom Hurrle; after two or three visits, the problem was completely alleviated. At the same time, Tom worked on other "sore spots" that have been problematic for a number of years, and we are making excellent progress.

Within a very short period of time, you can tell you are in good hands with Tom, as he thoughtfully and easily explains his treatment methods, approaches and considerations. I always feel better when I leave my treatments than I did when I entered - always. Tom is a careful listener, and as others have commented, his thoroughness and attention to detail yield impressive results. I recommended him thoroughly and completely.

I have been to Tom on 2 different occasions for 2 different issues. he attended to my immediate need while asking questions that helped guide him to help me on another level. My back pain disappeared within a few days without the aid of other medications and I am back to myself after the one treatment. The studio is inviting and a healing room. Tom's personality is open and comforting. you will not be disappointed.
